Okay, this might count as a pretty big bombshell, if Markos Moulitsas of the DailyKos is correct in his assumption.

Over the past few days, the internet has been abuzz with speculation when it comes to the topic of who possibly could have been Harry Reid’s mystery source for the topic of Mitt Romney’s tax returns.  Some thought it could’ve been someone directly related to the John McCain 2008 presidential campaign, or even McCain himself, but the Arizona Senator has basically denied that he is Reid’s source.

Reid has continued the “drip-drip” process of slowly revealing who the source is, when he told reporters today that the source was a “Republican”.  So if Reid isn’t bluffing, we could eliminate the source as someone who had partisan motivations in blowing Mitt Romney’s tax secret.

But if Moulitsas is correct, the source would definitely have political motivation in revealing that Mitt Romney neglected to pay taxes.  According to Moulitsas, the source could very well be Jon Huntsman, Sr. who is the father of failed 2012 presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, Jr.

Moulitsas writes:

Harry Reid has a Republican source who has told him that Mitt Romney didn’t pay taxes in 10 years. Who could he possibly known that would have that information? Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman’s dad sounds like the likely source.

Jon Huntsman Sr, is business partners with Robert C. Gay, who also happened to be Bain’s managing director between 1989 and 2004. And if anyone knows the machinations Bain used to evade taxes for itself and its partners, well, it would be the guy in charge of the firm’s finances.

Okay, that is definitely a connection Huntsman has with Bain.  The working relationship between the elder Huntsman and Robert C. Gay could definitely yield information that would be very interesting.

But if we are going to have a person, we must need a motive.  Why would Jon Huntsman, Sr. ruin Mitt Romney and therefore, give Barack Obama an extra four years in the Oval Office?

Well, we must leave the DailyKos and go to the blog “Cannonfire” in which the author makes the case for the younger Huntsman being the source.

You see, recently Jon Huntsman Jr. was apparently in the running to be named as head of the World Bank.  A source said:

Whether Huntsman urged Reid to push for his appointment or dismissed the idea is a matter of considerable disagreement, however.

One Huntsman family friend said that the former governor “fought hard to be named by Obama as head of the World Bank.

We have a motive!

Let’s put another piece of the pie together, the recent announcement that Jon Huntsman, Jr. would not attend the Republican National Convention in which he blasted the current GOP and said he would not attend another convention until

the party focuses on a bigger, bolder, more confident future for the United States — a future based on problem solving, inclusiveness, and a willingness to address the trust deficit, which is every bit as corrosive as our fiscal and economic deficits

Trust deficit!  I don’t think he’s talking about financial trust-busting, do you?  In a backhand way, he was basically saying that Mitt Romney nor any of the party establishment figures could not be trusted either.

Why couldn’t they be trusted?

What does Jon Huntsman, Jr. know?

This story is developing but please read every link in this tale because I think we are only getting the beginning of the puzzle.

EDIT:  9:56PM ET

Let’s address a few more issues to maybe close some of the holes in the story.  This is pure speculation first off, no substantial proof other than circumstantial on why Jon Huntsman (Sr. or Jr.) would be the source.

However, let’s try to answer a few common questions.

Why Now?  Why not when Huntsman was running in primary?
Yes, this might be the question to end all questions.  I only have a theory, but I think it’s worth listening to.  Look what happened to Newt Gingrich when he sauntered his way as co-frontrunner in the weeks leading up to the Iowa Caucus?  The mention of Bain as a negative, saw Gingrich blasted to smithereens.

Now Huntsman had the most financial clout outside of Romney, so money was no object really.  Still, Huntsman never gained much traction as his more “moderate” appearing credentials were under scrutiny.  So Huntsman wasn’t really a likely frontrunner as he faded from view until a third-place showing in New Hampshire.

So why not drop the game-changing bomb regarding Romney’s taxes?  My theory is that it wouldn’t have helped him as he was trying to raise his profile for 2016 where he probably thought he’d have a shot at being a frontrunner ala Romney in 2008’s thoughts.  Also, he was angling for an appointment (as stated earlier in the article) for the World Bank in which he’d probably try to resist burning bridges.

But now, Huntsman has been at serious odds with the GOP.  Remember the snafu when he addressed his wishes to see a “viable third party” form.  Since then, when was the last time you saw Huntsman in the news?

I’ll answer that for you, when he addressed that he would not go to the Republican National Convention.  Clearly the establishment sees Huntsman as a threat to the status quo.  So Huntsman probably needs to find an “out” to get away from the party.  AmericansElect didn’t work so what else would he have to do to prove that he was no longer associating himself with the modern-day GOP?

He ran to Harry Reid.  It all makes too much sense the more I think about it.  The GOP told him to stay away, so he backed off and decided to flip the bird to the Republican Party.

By dropping this bomb.

EDIT August 10th, 2:17PM:

The elder Huntsman has denied being the source for Harry Reid but has called on Romney to release his tax returns.  This still doesn’t dismiss the possibility that Huntsman Jr. was the source and here’s a bit more food for thought.  Hillary Clinton is retiring as Secretary of State after this term.  In the case that Barack Obama is re-elected, would a former Ambassador to China be interested in bolstering his bipartisan credentials?

More to come.
