This story is still developing but reports are swirling that Idaho Senator Mike Crapo (R) was arrested for DUI early Sunday morning. Crapo, a Mormon (alcohol usage is forbidden by the church), was pulled over and apparently failed “several sobriety tests” in Alexandria, VA.
Crapo has represented Idaho in the Senate since 1999, in the House from 1993-to-1999 and was elected to the Idaho State Senate in 1984.
While this story might get some hits and Crapo will receive scorn for this, we are glad that no one was hurt (including the Senator himself) after this. As the holiday season nears, always make sure you have a designated driver.
Crapo has released a statement:
I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance,” Crapo said. “I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter.
I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.
EDIT: Irrelevant kind of but Crapo favored a tax cut for small breweries in 2010. I expect that will be the butt of some jokes in the coming hours and days.
